Role of Synergy Collective Society in the funding ecosystem
Synergy Collective Society is a community-based, volunteer-run non-profit organization located in the Greater Vancouver area. Its core mandate is to blend arts and commerce with social responsibility in order to develop partnerships with CRA-registered charities and to raise funding for community-based programming. Synergy works primarily through its signature Just Singin Round singer–songwriter showcases at the Vancouver Rowing Club and through special projects such as the Surrogate Santa Project.
Rather than operating as a traditional grant-making foundation, Synergy acts as an intermediary and catalyst: it curates events, leverages sponsorships and donations, and channels the resulting revenues to selected partner charities and their direct-service programs. Since its inception in 1997, the Society reports having raised $2.8 million for 67 local charities and having provided direct funding to 55 community-based programs serving more than 185,000 residents across the North Shore, West Vancouver and the Lower Mainland.
Partnerships with charities and funded activities
Each year, Synergy partners with a small cohort of federally registered charities, chosen through a structured process. Interested organizations must be in good standing with the Canada Revenue Agency and submit a one-page letter of intent. The Board of Directors evaluates these submissions for partnership and program suitability, and successful charities then participate in planning their showcase and identifying how donated monies will be used within their organization.
Fundraising activities are centred on the Just Singin Round showcases, which combine performances by prominent Canadian singer–songwriters with dinner and community-building. Featured charities are responsible for ticket sales, volunteer support and some on-site fundraising initiatives, while Synergy coordinates overall production, training and event design. Additional projects, such as the Surrogate Santa Project, mobilize donors to assemble personalized hampers for individuals and families in need, in collaboration with social service agencies.
Training, capacity building and mentorship
Beyond direct financial support, Synergy emphasizes capacity building for its partner organizations. It delivers partnership retreats and workshops that teach collaborative planning, community engagement, leadership, systems management and sustainable networking. Charity representatives practice these skills in the context of the showcases, supported by mentorship from more experienced partner organizations.
Youth and adult volunteers are also offered structured mentorship and leadership opportunities, with individualized training plans and ongoing feedback. This dual focus on funding and learning positions Synergy as a hybrid arts presenter and social enterprise that strengthens the non-profit sector while channeling resources to front-line programs.
Community impact and values
Synergy’s model is grounded in values of inclusion, integrity, altruism, resilience and celebration. Its events highlight West Coast artists while raising visibility for local charities and encouraging reciprocal relationships among participants, sponsors and donors. The Society integrates environmentally conscious practices into event delivery and maintains long-term relationships with venues and corporate partners.
Through this combination of arts programming, financial support and organizational development, Synergy Collective Society plays a distinctive role in Vancouver’s community funding landscape, helping charities expand services, engage new supporters and sustain impactful programs.
