Role of STEPs on Arthur Foundation in the funding ecosystem
STEPs on Arthur Foundation is a community-based charitable foundation dedicated to strengthening and expanding the work of STEPs on Arthur, a long‑standing non-profit and social enterprise serving people with intellectual disabilities in Truro, Nova Scotia. The Foundation’s mandate is to generate, receive and administer financial contributions for major capital needs, including land, premises, equipment, infrastructure and technology that allow STEPs on Arthur to grow its programs and client capacity.
Created in May 2000, and formerly known as the Colchester Community Workshops Foundation, the organization leads capital campaigns and ongoing fundraising initiatives to underwrite significant investments such as the construction and renovation of Rotary House and Delaney House, specialized program spaces, accessible transportation and therapeutic environments.
Types of projects and funding focus
The Foundation concentrates on capital projects that have long-term impact on the quality and reach of services for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Documented projects include building acquisition and renovation, creation of additional program and rental spaces, replacement of major building components such as roofs, development of accessible outdoor and green spaces, and purchase of vehicles like an accessible van.
These investments are designed to enhance accessibility, inclusion, and community participation for STEPs on Arthur participants, while also improving the organization’s financial sustainability through revenue-generating spaces and modern infrastructure.
Beneficiaries, governance and community support
STEPs on Arthur is the sole operational beneficiary of the Foundation’s funding, ensuring that all donated resources directly support its mission and capital expansion. A volunteer Board of Directors oversees the management and administration of the Foundation, while staff such as the Administrative Coordinator handle day‑to‑day operations and donor relations.
The Foundation offers multiple giving options—online donations, e‑transfers, in‑person contributions, monthly “Living Legacy” commitments and themed campaigns like birthday giving—so individuals, businesses and community partners can contribute to current and future development projects that benefit clients and their families.
