Role of LutherCare Foundation in the funding ecosystem
LutherCare Foundation is the philanthropic arm of LutherCare Communities, a faith-based provider of seniors’ housing, care and community programs in Saskatchewan. Established in 1994 as a registered charity, the foundation’s purpose is to build relationships and raise funds that advance LutherCare’s vision of a safe and caring Continuum of Living™. Rather than operating open-call grant competitions, it channels donor contributions into priority projects and enhancements across LutherCare’s campuses and programs.
Donations to the foundation support a wide range of initiatives that go beyond basic operating funding. Examples highlighted on the site and in organizational reports include pool refurbishment, ceiling-track installations to improve mobility and safety, blanket and towel warmers for resident comfort, general support for group homes, and capital items such as accessible buses. Recent campaigns have also funded innovative interactive technologies like Obie projectors, which provide cognitive stimulation and engagement for seniors and individuals with complex care needs at Luther Seniors Centre, Luther Special Care Home and several group homes.
Funding themes and supported audiences
- Quality-of-life enhancements: Social and recreational programming, spiritual care, and wellness initiatives that help residents remain active, socially connected and emotionally supported.
- Equipment and infrastructure: Purchase of clinical and comfort equipment and contributions to renovations and upgrades in LutherCare’s independent living, intermediate care, long-term care and group home settings.
- Faith and community-based care: Ecumenical spiritual care and mission-related activities consistent with LutherCare’s Christian roots and partnerships with the Saskatchewan Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada.
The ultimate beneficiaries of this funding are residents, clients and participants across LutherCare’s housing, care homes, community day programs and group living communities in locations such as Saskatoon, Outlook and Estevan.
General approach to giving and stewardship
The foundation invites support through one-time and monthly online donations (via CanadaHelps), memorial and honourary gifts, general gifts, and planned gifts such as bequests, insurance, securities and endowments. All eligible contributions receive charitable tax receipts. Funds are then allocated, in collaboration with LutherCare leadership, to projects that align with organizational strategic priorities around quality of living, partnerships, innovation in talent and organizational stewardship.
Impact reporting is provided in community reports and strategic documents, which describe how donor support has enabled equipment purchases, facility improvements and expanded recreational opportunities. This transparency helps demonstrate that gifts directly enhance the comfort, independence and dignity of the people served by LutherCare.
Governance and integration with LutherCare Communities
LutherCare Foundation operates as part of the broader LutherCare Communities structure and shares its mission “to provide excellence in care, shelter and support in a nurturing Christian environment for all entrusted to our care.” The foundation works closely with the Board of Directors, Executive Leadership Team and operational leaders to identify funding priorities and ensure donations are used responsibly. A dedicated fund development coordinator supports relationship-building with donors and oversees key campaigns such as the Double My Impact appeal and special fundraising challenges.
Through this integrated model, LutherCare Foundation functions as a focused funding provider that leverages philanthropy to complement public and operating revenues, ensuring residents experience tangible improvements in their daily lives across the full continuum of LutherCare services.
