Grant and Funding Programs Offered by Cranbrook and District Community Foundation (CFKR)

The Community Foundation of the Kootenay Rockies (CFKR) is a community foundation serving Cranbrook, Fernie, Elkford, Sparwood and surrounding rural areas in the East Kootenay region of British Columbia. CFKR accepts charitable donations, builds permanently invested endowment funds, and uses the investment income as well as external project funding to provide ongoing financial support to local organizations. Since 2003, it has granted over $1 million to more than 300 local non-profit projects.

CFKR takes a broad and inclusive view of what builds healthy, vibrant and inclusive communities. Its granting encompasses animal welfare, arts, culture and heritage, education, environment, mental health and addictions, sport and recreation, programs for equity-deserving populations, and social and health services including housing. Funds are directed to qualified donees and charities across its service area, keeping donor capital local while maximizing long-term community impact.

Each year, CFKR runs structured community granting processes for the Cranbrook area and for the Elkford, Sparwood and Fernie Community Funds. These competitive calls for proposals have defined application periods, maximum request amounts and geographic eligibility rules, with online forms and clear contact points for applicant support. In addition to these ongoing local programs, CFKR also acts as a delivery partner for larger provincial and federal initiatives.

Examples include distributing funding from the Government of British Columbia’s Community Prosperity Fund to local charities addressing poverty and social inclusion, and flowing Government of Canada investments through the Community Services Recovery Fund and the Emergency Community Support Fund to community service organizations adapting to COVID‑19 impacts. CFKR has also partnered on national initiatives such as the RBC Future Launch Community Challenge and the Healthy Communities Initiative, channeling targeted project grants to youth-led activities and public‑space adaptations in the region.

Through its various funds and special programs, CFKR supports a wide range of organizations, from food banks, housing and homelessness initiatives, and health and mental health services, to arts and culture groups, youth action networks, seniors’ organizations and environmental projects. The foundation also enters into agency agreements to temporarily steward donations for emerging community initiatives until they secure charitable status or complete a specific project.

Governed by a volunteer board and supported by committees for finance, governance, granting and community funds, CFKR emphasizes accountability, responsiveness and sustainability in its operations. Its model of permanent endowment building combined with program-based funding enables long-term, flexible financial support for local priorities across the Kootenay Rockies.
