Grant and Funding Programs Offered by Canmore Hospital Foundation (CHF)

Canmore Hospital Foundation, legally known as the Canmore & Area Health Care Foundation, is a community-based charity dedicated to improving healthcare for residents and visitors in Alberta’s Bow Valley. Since 2003, it has acted as the primary philanthropic partner of Canmore General Hospital, channeling donations from individuals, businesses and partners into life‑saving investments. The Foundation focuses on four main funding pillars: equipment purchases, hospital programs, facilities and capital campaigns, and a growing endowment fund.

Through its Equipment Fund, the Foundation collaborates with Alberta Health Services and hospital staff to identify priority needs and purchase essential medical technology, from cardiac monitors and fetal monitors to lifts, OR equipment and specialized tools for emergency, obstetrics, long‑term and palliative care. Over $1 million has been invested in equipment between 2012 and 2021, with more than $150,000 in new equipment funded annually.

The Programs Fund supports both hospital programs and Foundation‑led initiatives that enhance patient and staff well‑being. This includes cancer care services, healing hospital gardens, Crossway Music Therapy for long‑term care residents, and Foundation programs such as Staff Appreciation and the Bow Valley Health Care Scholarships, which provide financial assistance to local students pursuing healthcare careers.

Facilities and capital campaign funding enables major renovations and new spaces at Canmore General Hospital, such as the Golden Eagle View long‑term care revitalization, expanded labour and delivery rooms, upgrades to the cancer and palliative care units, a refurbished endoscopy suite and a multi‑million‑dollar emergency department revitalization. These projects are typically delivered in partnership with the Government of Alberta, Alberta Health Services and community donors.

The Endowment Fund provides a permanent financial base to support future health initiatives in the region. With more than $2 million already accumulated and a target of $5 million, the endowment is designed to generate stable annual funding for equipment, programs and facility improvements. Donors can contribute legacy gifts or create named endowments aligned with specific healthcare priorities.

The Foundation’s funding ultimately benefits patients, families, hospital staff and first responders throughout the Bow Valley. Its scholarships and bursaries help build the next generation of healthcare professionals, while staff appreciation initiatives and mental‑health‑oriented projects such as innovative PTSD treatment technologies support the current workforce. Capital and equipment projects shorten wait times, expand service capacity and improve the comfort and safety of care environments.

Public reporting through audited financial statements, annual reports and strategic plans demonstrates how donations are allocated each year, with key metrics such as total healthcare funding, annual equipment spending and endowment growth.
