Grant and Funding Programs Offered by Canada Cycles for Kids (CCFK)

Canada Cycles for Kids (CCFK) is a volunteer-driven Canadian non-profit organization that uses long-distance and regional bicycle tours to raise money for children’s health. Founded in 2002, the organization channels all funds raised to pediatric hospitals and child-focused health foundations across Canada. Its activities complement traditional hospital fundraising by targeting specific pieces of medical equipment and child health programs identified with partner foundations.

Since its inception, CCFK has organized more than twenty fundraising tours, cycling over 26,000 kilometers across every Canadian province and parts of the territories. Over these tours, the group has raised more than $3.4 million. The organization explicitly states that all monies raised are directed to the beneficiary organizations, underlining its role as a conduit for philanthropic funding rather than a service provider.

CCFK’s funding focuses on children’s health and hospital care. Through partnerships with foundations such as the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada, Make-A-Wish, the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation, the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, and numerous provincial and territorial children’s hospital foundations, CCFK finances concrete needs including specialized medical equipment, simulators for clinical training, incubators, cardiac and ultrasound technology, and items that improve comfort and communication for young patients.

The “Spotlight on Giving” section illustrates this approach with annual lists of supported projects. Recent commitments include purchasing critical care monitors, stretchers, ultrasound machines, simulation mannequins, eye-gaze communication systems, sensory room equipment, and other pediatric devices. These examples show that CCFK generally provides project-based, one-time capital funding for defined items rather than operating grants.

The organization’s impact is national in scope. Beneficiaries span coast to coast, including hospitals and foundations in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Québec, the Atlantic provinces, and the North (Yukon and Northwest Territories). The “Who we’ve helped” page lists each partner foundation and confirms that all funds raised have been used to support these organizations. CCFK’s tours are often designed to reflect this geography, with routes such as Vancouver–Montreal, Halifax–Montreal, Calgary–Vancouver, tours across Newfoundland, and rides in the Yukon and Alaska.

CCFK does not appear to run an open application-based grant program. Instead, it works directly with selected hospital foundations and child health organizations to identify priority needs each year. Funds collected from tours and related donations are then allocated to these partners to purchase specified equipment or to support defined initiatives. This discretionary grantmaking model allows the organization to remain lean while demonstrating clear, itemized impact for donors and beneficiary institutions.

Founded by cycling enthusiasts Marc Balevi and Robert Fetherstonhaugh in 2002, CCFK began with an inaugural ride from Vancouver to Montreal that raised over $180,000. Subsequent tours have ranged from short regional rides to multi-province journeys, with each edition (CCFK I, II, III, etc.) documenting dates, routes, kilometers cycled and amounts raised. Over time, the organization has expanded the number of beneficiary foundations and diversified the medical equipment and programs it supports, while remaining focused on helping sick children across Canada through cycling-powered philanthropy.
