Role of BGC Canada in the funding ecosystem
BGC Canada, formerly known as Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada, is the national body for a network of Clubs that serve children and youth in large cities, small towns, rural areas, and Indigenous communities across every province and one territory. As a registered charity, it raises and manages funds from partners, donors, and institutional funders, and redistributes these resources to support local Clubs and national initiatives that create safe, supportive places for young people.
The organization has developed a mission-critical family of funds that target some of the most pressing needs facing children and youth: food security, mental health, and learning and development. These funds are used to underwrite essential programming, capacity-building, and innovation across the BGC movement.
Funding themes and types of support
- Food Fund – Provides foundational food support so that no young person is held back by hunger. Funding helps Clubs deliver meals, snacks, and nutrition-related services as part of their local programming.
- Mental Health Fund – Responds to the growing demand for mental health support by investing in vital programming, staff training, and local grants that enable Clubs and community-based initiatives to expand or enhance mental health services for youth.
- Learning & Development Fund – Supports innovative learning and development programs, including digital initiatives such as the MyBGC youth portal, helping young people build skills, confidence, and positive relationships.
Through these and other initiatives described in its annual reports, BGC Canada channels financial support where it is most needed, helping Clubs cope with rising operating costs, labour market pressures, and inflation—especially higher food costs. Funding can cover program delivery, staff training, and other mission-aligned expenses that improve outcomes for children and youth.
Transparency and accountability
BGC Canada publishes detailed annual reports and audited financial statements, which highlight the support received from partners, funders, and donors and how that support is invested in communities. Additional regulatory filings are available through the Canada Revenue Agency’s charity listings, reinforcing its commitment to transparent governance and responsible stewardship of funds.
Mission, vision, and impact
The organization’s mission is to provide safe, supportive places where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships, and develop confidence and skills for life. Its vision is that all young people discover and achieve their dreams and grow up to be healthy, successful, and active participants in society.
Guided by core values of belonging, respect, encouragement and support, working together, and speaking out, BGC Canada combines direct program leadership with financial support to Clubs. By partnering with corporations, foundations, governments, and individual donors, it leverages philanthropy into concrete local grants and resources that expand access to quality out-of-school programs and services for young people nationwide.
