Grant and Funding Programs Offered by Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic Education Foundation (ALCEF)

The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic Education Foundation (ALCEF) is a registered charitable foundation associated with the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board in eastern Ontario. Operating entirely on donations from individuals, schools, community groups and fundraising events, the Foundation channels private support into direct financial assistance for vulnerable students and their families across the board’s schools.

Since 2007, ALCEF reports having provided more than $650,000 in financial aid to over 2,000 students and families. Its core purpose is to respond quickly and discreetly when families in the school community face unexpected financial hardship. Typical expenses covered include eyeglasses, medical and health-related supplies, food, clothing, emergency transportation and other essential needs that, if unmet, would negatively affect students’ well-being and ability to engage in learning.

The Foundation does not run an open public call for proposals in the way a classical grant program might. Instead, it operates a discretionary aid model administered in collaboration with local schools and the Office of the Director of Education. Families in urgent need are encouraged to contact their school principal, who then works with central administration to assess requests and access Foundation funds on behalf of the student or family. This approach is intended to be dignified, confidential and responsive.

ALCEF’s activities are documented through annual audited financial statements and specific Emergency Response Fund summaries. These documents, published on the Foundation’s page, give an overview of the total funds raised and disbursed each year, and highlight the scope of emergency support provided across the district over multiple years.

The Foundation receives no direct financial support from the Ontario Ministry of Education. Its capacity to provide aid depends entirely on charitable donations and fundraising initiatives. A flagship event is the annual ALCE Foundation Charity Golf Tournament hosted by the school board, with proceeds directed to the Foundation. In addition, 50/50 raffles, memorial donations and direct online giving via CanadaHelps are promoted as ways for individuals, businesses and community organizations to contribute.
