How to apply

  • Step 1: Check whether you already receive OAS and GIS
    • If yes, no application is required.
    • GAINS is calculated from existing federal and tax information.
  • Step 2: Meet the annual tax filing requirement
    • File your income tax return every year by April 30.
    • Do this even if you have no income to report.
  • Step 3: Submit a GIS application if needed
    • Complete the GIS application form.
    • Send it to your nearest Service Canada office.

Processing and Agreement

  • Existing OAS and GIS recipients are assessed automatically using government tax and benefit information.
  • If you are not already receiving OAS and GIS, you must file your annual tax return or submit a GIS application.
  • If you disagree with a decision on eligibility or payments, you can contact the Ontario Ministry of Finance.
  • A formal Notice of Objection must be filed within 90 days of the written decision and sent by registered mail.
