Role of The Friends of Stewart Hall in the funding ecosystem
The Friends of Stewart Hall is a not-for-profit association and registered charitable foundation created to support the Pointe-Claire Cultural Centre, Stewart Hall, and the Stewart Hall Art Gallery. Based in a historic lakeside cultural complex in Pointe-Claire, Quebec, the organization raises funds from individuals, corporate members and local supporters, then redistributes these funds through a variety of projects that advance arts and culture for residents of Pointe-Claire and the broader West Island.
According to its mission, The Friends help finance initiatives that enrich cultural life, such as supporting art acquisitions for the City of Pointe-Claire’s permanent collection, an artist-in-residence program, and the production of catalogues and brochures for exhibitions at the Stewart Hall Art Gallery. They also fund the purchase of computers, audiovisual equipment and furniture for the Reading and Reference Room and the Kid’s Corner, as well as transportation for daycare groups participating in cultural workshops and shows through the “Magic Bus” program.
Funding activities and supported projects
The organization does not present itself as a competitive grant program with open calls, but rather as a discretionary funder that channels donations into concrete cultural projects and infrastructure improvements tied to Stewart Hall. Past and ongoing funded activities include support for major community celebrations, such as Stewart Hall’s 100th anniversary events and activities linked to the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation, along with a range of smaller cultural enhancements and audience-development initiatives.
To generate resources, The Friends of Stewart Hall organize a variety of fundraising activities, including permanent used book sales in the Reading and Reference Room, sales of CDs and exhibition-related items during concerts and youth shows, plant sales, and rentals of lawn chairs and cushions during summer festivals and concerts in the park. These revenues are then reinvested into the cultural centre and its programs.
History, governance and community base
The Friends of Stewart Hall emerged from a group of engaged citizens and members of the Stewart Hall Advisory Board who, in 2004, sought a structured way to support cultural development in their community. The association was incorporated on 2004-06-01 and obtained charitable status in 2005. It is run entirely by volunteers, with guidance from the Director of the Cultural Centre, the Director of the Art Gallery and the Stewart Hall Advisory Board. The Board of Directors, elected for two-year mandates at the annual general meeting, oversees fundraising and the selection of supported projects.
With around 200 members, the Friends constitute an important partner in the local cultural ecosystem, complementing municipal funding by mobilizing private and community support. Through their financial contributions to arts programming, equipment and accessibility initiatives, they help sustain a vibrant cultural hub serving Pointe-Claire and the wider West Island community.
