Grant and Funding Programs Offered by Ontario Turfgrass Research Foundation (OTRF)

The Ontario Turfgrass Research Foundation (OTRF) is a Canadian charitable foundation devoted to advancing turfgrass science. Headquartered in Ontario, it channels donations, sponsorships and industry contributions into competitive research grants that support turfgrass management on golf courses, sports fields, public parks, municipal greenspaces and residential lawns. OTRF positions itself as the Canadian leader in turfgrass research funding and focuses on projects that improve products, practices and sustainable enhancements for the turf industry.

Each year, OTRF issues a formal Request for Proposals and invites academic researchers from universities across Canada and northern U.S. states who work in turfgrass management to apply for funding. A dedicated Research Grant Committee reviews grant applications and allocates funds to projects that address identified sector needs. Broad priority themes include sustainable turfgrass management, best management practices, pest and disease control, alternatives to conventional pesticides, improved diagnostics, robotics and new technologies, breeding and evaluation of turfgrass species and cultivars, wear tolerance and recovery, nutrient and water management, climate change impacts, economics of turf decisions, comparisons of natural and synthetic turf, and the wider societal benefits of turfgrass.

OTRF-funded research is organized into several thematic areas such as agronomy, entomology, plant pathology, weed control and sports turf. The foundation publishes reports and interim findings from supported projects, documenting work by researchers at institutions including the University of Guelph, Oregon State University, Michigan State University, Penn State and others. These studies cover topics like stress tolerance, nutrient optimization, reclaimed water use, safer playing surfaces and integrated weed management. The results are intended to help turf managers reduce inputs while maintaining performance and to support evidence-based policy and best practices.

Chartered in 1979, OTRF emerged from turf industry leaders who saw the need for continuous, well-funded research and education in turfgrass management. Over the decades, the foundation has worked closely with industry partners and donors, including through major campaigns such as the fundraising effort for the Guelph Turfgrass Institute. OTRF is governed by a volunteer board of directors drawn from across the turf sector and related industries. Association partners, corporate sponsors and individual members provide ongoing financial support that underpins its research grants.

OTRF’s funding ultimately aims to benefit both the turfgrass industry and the general public by supporting healthy, safe, and environmentally responsible green spaces where people live, work and play. By prioritizing applied research and knowledge transfer, the foundation helps superintendents, sports field managers and other professionals respond to climate, environmental and budget challenges while preserving the long-term sustainability of turf systems.
