The Musquodoboit Valley Health Foundation is a local charitable foundation serving the Musquodoboit Valley region in central Nova Scotia. Established in 1995, it was created to secure funds for the Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital, the Musquodoboit Valley Home for Special Care (Braeside), and broader community health care needs in the area.
Role of the Foundation in the Funding Ecosystem
The Foundation works alongside hospital and long‑term care leadership to identify priority needs and provide financial resources that enhance care for local residents. Its mandate includes raising money and then allocating those funds to equipment, programs and initiatives that improve the functioning of the hospital, the long‑term care facility, and the health of community members.
Within the Grow Within project, the Foundation oversees provincial community‑recruitment funds aimed at helping the valley recruit, welcome and retain health‑care professionals. It provides governance for these monies while a project manager coordinates implementation with partners such as Nova Scotia Health, Nova Scotia Community College, Eastern College, schools and community groups.
Support for Education and Workforce Development
A key emerging focus of the Foundation is helping local residents access health‑care careers. The Foundation has committed to offering financial support for students entering the Continuing Care Assistant (CCA) training delivered in Middle Musquodoboit, reducing financial barriers so more community members can participate. It is also in the process of creating a bursary for existing staff who wish to upgrade their education to become Licensed Practical Nurses.
These education supports complement the province’s tuition‑free CCA initiative and are part of a broader "grow from within" strategy that aims to build a stable local workforce rooted in the community.
Recognition and Community‑Building Initiatives
Beyond direct education support, the Foundation is encouraged to fund staff recognition and engagement activities that strengthen morale and retention. This includes covering costs for cards and small gifts, seasonal campaigns such as the 12 Days of Christmas, and other appreciation efforts coordinated with community volunteers.
Through these investments, the Musquodoboit Valley Health Foundation helps foster a positive work environment for health‑care staff and a stronger connection between the community and its care providers.
