Role of the Montreal Geriatric Institute Foundation in the funding ecosystem

The Montreal Geriatric Institute Foundation (Fondation Institut de gériatrie de Montréal – FIGM) is the main philanthropic and financial partner of the Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal (IUGM). Through campaigns, special events, corporate partnerships and individual donations, it raises funds that are then invested in projects aimed at improving care, advancing research and sharing knowledge about aging and seniors’ health.
The Foundation explicitly funds scientific research and innovative projects that improve the quality of care, advance knowledge about aging, and promote the well-being and autonomy of older adults. It also supports the development of living environments and tools that make it easier for seniors to age in a healthy and dignified way in Québec.

Main funding themes and types of support

  • Research funding and scholarships – FIGM finances research at the IUGM Research Centre, recognized as one of the largest French-speaking centres dedicated to aging and seniors' health. It grants scholarships to researchers working on the neurocognitive and neurobiological dimensions of aging, as well as on ways to enhance quality of life, autonomy and services for older people.
  • Innovation in care and infrastructure – The Foundation raises funds for concrete infrastructure and care-improvement projects such as the design and installation of Sensory Spaces in long-term care, redevelopment of consultation areas in outpatient clinics, and the purchase of rehabilitation equipment to enable more individualized care, especially in the context of the pandemic.
  • Equipment and comfort for users – FIGM finances the purchase of equipment and amenities (for example televisions for acute-care users) that enhance comfort, safety and overall well-being for patients and residents of the institute.
  • Knowledge dissemination and prevention – By supporting initiatives like the Centre AvantÂge and other outreach activities, the Foundation helps transfer up-to-date research findings to the general public and caregivers through conferences, training and workshops focused on healthy aging and prevention.

Supported audiences and impact

The Foundation’s primary beneficiaries are older adults receiving care or services through the Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal, along with their families and caregivers. Indirectly, it also supports researchers, clinicians and students who work within the institute’s research and clinical programs.
Through its activity reports, FIGM demonstrates the impact of the donations it manages: improved quality of care, faster development of research on diseases associated with aging, new tools to preserve independence, and the creation of environments adapted to seniors’ needs. Since 2010, it has channelled many millions of dollars in support of these priorities.

Governance, transparency and community engagement

The Foundation is overseen by a board of directors and supported by a professional team dedicated to philanthropy, events and communications. It publishes annual activity reports detailing the allocation of funds and the results of the projects supported. FIGM also mobilizes a broad community of monthly donors, volunteers and corporate partners who are encouraged to contribute time or money to help build a Québec where it is, in their words, "good to grow old".
