Role of HGCC Foundation in the funding ecosystem
The HGCC Foundation is a community-focused charitable foundation associated with Hamilton Golf & Country Club in Hamilton, Ontario. Created by club members to “give back” locally, it raises money through member golf tournaments, auctions, galas, sponsorships and direct and legacy donations. Since its establishment in 2012, the Foundation has raised and distributed over $5 million to local charities, with a strong emphasis on food security, children and youth, housing and education.
Each year, the Foundation partners with a portfolio of member-sponsored local charities. Recent partners include De Mazenod Door Outreach, Hamilton Food Share, Ancaster Community Services, Cancer Assistance Program, Hamilton Music Collective, Empowerment Squared, Habitat for Humanity Hamilton, the Catholic Children’s Aid Society’s kinship program, TEAD Therapeutic Riding Centre, Muscular Dystrophy Canada and the Bulldogs Foundation. Multi‑year funding commitments over two or three years are used to give organizations more predictable financial support in the face of rising demand and costs.
Bursary Program and educational support
A major focus of the Foundation is its Bursary Program for Hamilton secondary school students with financial need who are pursuing post‑secondary education. The Foundation transitioned from Crown Ward bursaries (2015–2021) to a Secondary School Bursary Program launched in 2022. The number of bursaries has grown from a small pilot to coverage of all Hamilton‑Wentworth District School Board and Hamilton‑Wentworth Catholic District School Board secondary schools, plus alternative and French‑language schools. Since 2015, around $300,000 has been donated through bursaries to help students overcome financial barriers to college and university.
The annual Bursary Luncheon brings together recipients, teachers and Foundation representatives, highlighting the life‑changing impact of awards that can cover much of a student’s first year of tuition. A mentorship component is being developed to connect students with HGCC members for guidance and networking.
General funding approach and governance
The HGCC Foundation uses a structured governance framework, with a volunteer board and formal donation policies and funding criteria. Governance documents outline how charities are selected, the focus on organizations serving children, youth and families, and the preference for initiatives that address food insecurity, housing and opportunities for vulnerable populations. Funding allocations are formally approved and presented at an annual cheque presentation ceremony, where partner organizations receive grants and share impact results.
Signature fundraising events such as the Dick Borthwick Memorial Golf Tournament and the Par For a Cause women’s charity tournament are key revenue sources, regularly generating hundreds of thousands of dollars that are then disbursed as grants and bursaries. The Foundation also offers “Golf for Three” certificates to support external charity golf events and welcomes endowments and planned gifts from members to sustain its programs over the long term.
Supported audiences and overall impact
Overall, the HGCC Foundation positions itself as an important local funder advancing food programs, cancer and health supports, youth arts and recreation, housing initiatives and educational access. By combining member philanthropy with clear criteria and multi‑year commitments, it helps stabilize critical community services and expands opportunities for young people across the Hamilton area.
