Role of Harmony Foundation in the funding ecosystem
Harmony Foundation is a Canadian registered charity dedicated to building socially and environmentally sustainable communities. Since 1985 it has worked with educators, community leaders, businesses, governments and civil society to develop practical tools and training programs that enable local action on issues such as climate change, biodiversity conservation, sustainable cities, clean water and food security. The Foundation operates both as a producer of educational resources and as a provider of financial and material support to partner organizations and community initiatives.
Harmony’s work extends across Canada and to more than 36 countries. Through international cooperation projects, it has helped adapt its community development methods to local contexts in Mexico, Brazil, the Middle East, China, Africa and elsewhere. These collaborations often combine funding, mentoring and educational materials to strengthen local capacity for agro‑forestry, watershed management, youth engagement, women’s leadership and poverty reduction linked to environmental protection.
Funding themes and typical initiatives
The Foundation focuses its support on themes such as biodiversity and species at risk, social and environmental responsibility, sustainable agriculture and low‑impact technologies. For example, Harmony has supported the Abayudaya community in eastern Uganda with tools, seeds and training for sustainable farming, and has backed GRUPEDSAC in Mexico for its Eco‑Tequio program, which teaches youth and adults to use ecotechnologies to achieve food, housing and energy self‑sufficiency. It has also promoted Indigenous‑led conservation initiatives, including proposals for large conservation areas for endangered caribou in British Columbia’s Inland Temperate Rainforest.
Beyond direct project support, Harmony has produced more than 30 books, guides and electronic presentations that organizations can use to launch or strengthen their own initiatives. These resources cover topics such as green workplace practices, sustainable community planning, youth community service, urban forests, biodiversity, and corporate social responsibility. Many programs follow a “train the trainers” approach, multiplying impact by equipping local leaders to educate and mobilize their own communities.
Supported audiences and overall impact
Harmony Foundation’s primary audiences include educators, youth, community and Indigenous leaders, municipalities, NGOs, and businesses interested in improving their environmental performance. Its programs have helped municipalities design local sustainability projects, schools integrate environmental values into curricula, companies green their operations, and grassroots organizations access practical tools and occasional financial support to implement community projects.
Over time, Harmony’s combination of educational content, advisory support and targeted funding has earned it international recognition, including the UN Global 500 Award and other distinctions. The organization continues to focus on biodiversity protection, species at risk and social responsibility, while promoting cooperation between sectors and across borders to address the environmental and development challenges facing current and future generations.
