Grant and Funding Programs Offered by Grand River Hospital Foundation

Waterloo Regional Health Network Foundation is the unified philanthropic arm of Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN), created through the amalgamation of St. Mary’s General Hospital Foundation and Grand River Hospital Foundation. Based in the Kitchener‑Waterloo region of Ontario, the Foundation mobilizes community generosity to finance life‑saving care across WRHN’s three sites at Queen’s Blvd, Midtown and Chicopee.

The Foundation exists to bridge the gap between government allocations and the actual cost of delivering high‑quality hospital care. In Ontario, most new and replacement medical equipment is not funded by the Ministry of Health. WRHN Foundation raises and directs funds to priority equipment purchases, specialized programs and patient‑centred initiatives so that nearly 1.5 million people in the region can access modern, compassionate care close to home.

Donations to the Foundation support a wide range of care areas, including cancer care, cardiac services, children’s programs and the NICU, eye care, emergency medicine, mental health and addictions, renal care, and respiratory and thoracic care. Impact reporting highlights major investments in diagnostic and treatment technologies such as MRI, chemistry analyzers, SPECT‑CT scanners, general X‑ray equipment, orthopedic tools, retinal surgery programs and chemotherapy chairs for the regional cancer centre.

WRHN Foundation channels community gifts into multiple forms of financial support: funding capital equipment, contributing to facility upgrades, backing innovative clinical programs, and supporting education and resources for healthcare teams. A significant share of its annual expenses goes directly to “Hospital Equipment & Programs Funded,” as detailed in its impact and financial reports.

The Foundation offers many ways for individuals and organizations to contribute, including one‑time and monthly donations, memorial gifts, gratitude gifts to care teams, gifts of securities, estate and legacy giving, endowment funds and gifts in kind. Signature lotteries and community events, such as road hockey tournaments, mental health dinners and themed campaigns, generate additional revenue that is reinvested into WRHN priorities.

Collective initiatives like the She Shares giving circle allow donors to pool contributions and vote on which hospital projects or equipment to support, illustrating how the Foundation also facilitates participatory philanthropy.
