Role of Fondation Louise-Amélie in the funding ecosystem
Fondation Louise-Amélie Inc is a small charitable foundation closely linked to the Centre Louise-Amélie, a shelter and support resource for women experiencing male intimate partner violence and their children in Haute-Gaspésie, Québec. Created in 1993, the foundation’s primary role is to meet specific financial needs of the Centre so it can maintain and improve its free, safe and confidential services of shelter, accompaniment and public awareness.
The foundation does not operate open-call grant programs; instead, it acts as a dedicated funding body for a single community organization. It channels the generosity of individual and institutional donors towards concrete projects and operating needs of the Centre, helping to enhance living conditions and support activities for women and children in crisis.
Funding mechanisms and activities
To fulfill its mission, Fondation Louise-Amélie uses several fundraising mechanisms. It solicits monetary donations from the public and partner organizations and issues charitable tax receipts. The foundation also organizes recurring fundraising events such as wine and cheese tastings, postal solicitation campaigns, community soup events and other annual activities that mobilize the local community around the fight against intimate partner violence.
An important tool is the eco-responsible thrift shop and social project known as the “comptoir économique 100 FLA-FLA”. Open to the public, this boutique sells clothing, furniture, books, household items and upcycled creations made from recovered materials within a social support program. Revenues from this initiative, supported by a team of volunteers, are directed to the foundation’s financial support of the Centre.
Supported audiences and overall impact
Through the resources it mobilizes, Fondation Louise-Amélie contributes directly to improving services offered to women who are victims of conjugal violence and to their children in Haute-Gaspésie. The funds help sustain shelter operations, psychosocial support, youth services and awareness activities carried out by the Centre Louise-Amélie. In this way, the foundation plays a targeted but significant role in the local social safety net for women facing violence.
